Diabetic Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can occur if you have diabetes. High blood sugar (glucose) can injure nerves throughout your body and unfortunately nerve damage cannot be reversed.
About 1 in 3 Americans experience chronic pain. Of those 1 in 5 experience neuropathic pain.
Types of diabetic neuropathy
- Peripheral – most common type of neuropathy, which target the legs, feet, arms and hands
- Proximal – second most common type of neuropathy, causing pain hips, thighs and buttocks
- Autonomic – nerve damage between internal organs (lungs, heart, bladder, blood vessels) and central nervous system
- Focal – least common type of neuropathy, which targets the head torso or legs
Prevention and Treatment:
- Manage and monitor blood glucose levels
- Balanced diet
- Staying active
- No smoking
