Diabetic Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can occur if you have diabetes. High blood sugar (glucose) can injure nerves throughout your body and unfortunately nerve damage cannot be reversed.

About 1 in 3 Americans experience chronic pain. Of those 1 in 5 experience neuropathic pain.

Types of diabetic neuropathy

  1. Peripheral – most common type of neuropathy, which target the legs, feet, arms and hands
  2. Proximal – second most common type of neuropathy, causing pain hips, thighs and buttocks
  3. Autonomic – nerve damage between internal organs (lungs, heart, bladder, blood vessels) and central nervous system
  4. Focal – least common type of neuropathy, which targets the head torso or legs

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Manage and monitor blood glucose levels
  • Balanced diet
  • Staying active
  • No smoking
